The Tonle Sap lake is the largest fresh water reservoir of South East Asia and one of the most important fresh water fish sources in the world. As part of the Mekong river system the big lake’s fish provides a living to about 90% of the 3 million people living on its embankments. The Tonle Sap plays an important part in Khmer mythology with the seven headed Naga snake of the Lake at the center of many enchanting tales.
On the way to the Tonle Sap lake we pass through local villages and stop on the surrounding hills to catch an impressive sight of the Lake. We continue by Vespa to rendezvous with a boat that takes us on our lake exploration. Life on the Lake is nothing like you have ever seen before: schools, pagoda’s, markets, crocodile farms and everything else imaginable floats on boats and water rafts.
Life on the lake is filled with traditions, such as fishermen who consider it to be against Buddhist faith to take a life and instead wait for the fishes to die naturally. They limit the catch to what is needed to provide for the family. Nothing is wasted and fish parts are used to produce many items such as fertilizer, soap and “Prahok”, the famous intense tasting fish paste.
The lake discovery ends with drinks and snacks (or snakes!) to enjoy a spectacular sunset that transforms the lake in a kaleidoscope of vibrant colors and unforgettable scenes before returning to town by Vespa.
This wonderful lake exploration tour starts with the pick up by Vespa at your hotel at 2 pm and includes all passes, an expert guide, food and refreshments, boat trip, Vespa and drivers. You’ll return at your hotel again at around 7 pm.
