Overview

A special experience riding from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. We ride on small back roads with little traffic and some short off-road sections. The terrain is undulating with no major climbs. The trip is fully supported, including a bus. Your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty.

This tour is suitable for riders with some off-road biking experience. There are some small hills, but these can be tackled by anyone with even a moderate amount of fitness. The emphasis on this tour is Thailand’s scenery off the beaten track. You will see waterfalls, lakes and dams around Mae Taeng, then onward to Chiang Dao for its caves. Along the road stops at Akha, Lisu and Palaung hill tribe villages. We will visit Fang, ride along the Kok River onto Tha Ton and take a longtail boat to end up in Chiang Rai for a visit to the Hot Springs and the famous White temple. What an adventure!

Itinerary

Day 1 : Bua Thong waterfalls to Mae Ngat Dam

We pick you up at the hotel and travel by car to Bua Thong waterfall with its dramatic white limestone cliffs where your bikes are waiting for you. Bua Thong waterfall is called Sticky waterfall by the local people. The water is very calcium-rich and this makes the rocks are almost creamy white. From here the tour takes you through villages where time seems to have stood still. You will see farmers working in rice paddies and there is a stop at a local school. We will ride through the pretty and pristine natural environments of the Si Lanna National Park towards Mae Ngat Dam, a hydroelectric dam which impounds the Mae Ngat River. Here we take a long tail boat which takes us to the center of the giant lake. We will stay the night in floating bungalows on this beautiful lake. You can spend the evening relaxing, swimming, canoeing or fishing. Distance today 29 kilometers.

Day 2 : Around Chiang Dao

After breakfast, we take a transfer from our resort to the Chiang Dao Caves and the start of this day’s ride. Chiang Dao Caves features beautiful crystal formations and is an interesting place to visit. Boasting some of the most spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations in the country, Chiang Dao Cave stretches many kilometers into the mountains. The cave is part of the 2,100-metre-high Doi Chiang Dao mountain range, the third highest peak in Thailand. After a visit to the cave, we’ll ride through rice fields set among soaring limestone cliffs. Our ride will be a mixture of dirt paths cut by local hill tribes and we may meet some tribe peoples – Akha, Lisu, and Palaung – from the area. There is time to stop in their villages and get a feel for their lifestyle and culture. The colorful Palaungs are recent migrants from Myanmar, much like the Lisu and Akha before. You will see the Palaung women adorned with heavy brass waist-bands working the fields. Distance today 35 km

Day 3 : Chiang Dao to Tha Ton

This morning we transfer to Fang and the start of the next leg of our ride. From here we ride the back roads through many small villages following the Kok River. This is one of the most scenic parts of the trip. There is again time to stop for markets, photo’s, refreshments and of course chats and food with local villagers. The river and mountain views are breathtaking and the lack of traffic will make you enjoy every minute of this route. We end this day’s pleasurable ride at the small town of Mae Salak on the provincial border between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Time to enjoy the well-situated resort with great views over the river from your room, or relax and have a dip in the pool. Also, local Lahu children will come to the resort and perform traditional music and dance. Distance today 40 km

Day 4 : Tha Ton to Chiang Rai

The last leg. From Mae Salak we first cycle to a hill tribe village and have another chance to interact with the locals, get a feel for village life and the hill tribe lifestyle, besides more breathtaking views. From here we take a long tail boat which will take us over the Kok river towards Chiang Rai. Before we reach the city of Chiang Rai we start to cycle again. We will pass the Ruammit elephant camp and visit some hot springs. Then last, but not least, a visit to the famous White Temple south of Chiang Rai, Wat Rong Khun, where our tour ends. Depending on your arrangements you can stay in Chiang Rai or we can transfer you back to Chiang Mai. Distance today 38 km
