Yangon is a region in Lower Myanmar bordered by the Gulf of Martaban. Its capital, Yangon, is the country’s largest city and was the national capital under British rule, when it was known as Rangoon. A mix of colonial architecture, modern high-rises and gilded Buddhist pagodas defines its skyline. Its famed Shwedagon Paya, a huge, shimmering pagoda complex, draws thousands of pilgrims annually.
